God Will Guide Us

I read this quote this morning here. It speaks to Stephanie and my life in a unique way right now…

“I am satisfied that when the Almighty wants me to do, or not to do, a particular thing, he finds a way of letting me know it.” -Abraham Lincoln

Amazed People Still Go to Church

Justin Buzzard keeps posting great quotes. Here is another,

Martyn Llyod Jones reporting after his six months away from preaching due to illness, in which he simply attended church services:

“My general impression is that most of our services are terribly depressing! I am amazed people still go to church; most who go are female and over the age of forty. The note missing is ‘joy in the Holy Ghost’…There is no life, no power! We of all people ought to have it. Joy and power are intimately related. One without the other is spurious.”

Put in Some Prayer

Helpful reminder from Charles Spurgeon and C.J. Mahaney…

I came across a quote by Mr. Spurgeon recently where he said, “I always feel it well just to put in a few words of prayer between everything I do.” That is seriously helpful counsel, because too often I don’t put in just a few words of prayer. I move from one meeting to the next meeting, and cares are accumulating in my soul because I am not stopping at a certain point to “put in a few words of prayer.” Read more…

The Surprising, Steering Hand of God in Our Lives

For more months than I can count Stephanie and I have been wondering what God has in store for our future. We have experienced the hand of God working for our good the entire time, but there are still a couple decisions that we have been continually praying for guidance over.

I read this quote on Justin Buzzard’s blog this morning and it is strikingly similar to my own experience of God’s guiding in my life.

“As I review God’s steering of my life, one thing that stands out is the element of surprise at all the crucial points. I was never expecting what came; I was always projecting something else.”
-J.I. Packer

I know some of you who read this blog are also seeking the guidance of the Lord in some crucial things right now. I hope this quote inspiring you to seek the surprise, and allow less anxiety over your own finite projections.

God Unknown and Known

“His essence, indeed, is incomprehensible, utterly transcending all human thought; but on each of his works his glory is engraven in characters so bright, so distinct, and so illustrious, that none, however dull and illiterate, can plead ignorance as their excuse.” – John Calvin, Institutes of Religion, 1:51 (1.5.1) as quoted in R.C. Sproul, Grace Unknown: The Heart of Reformed Theology, pg. 35

Don’t Put Strawberries and Cream on Your Fishing Hook

March 9, 2008 3 comments

There is a continual debate about how churches should structure their church services and how Christians should evangelize those who don’t know Jesus. How about this,

“I often went fishing up in Maine during the summer. Personally, I am very fond of strawberries and cream, but I have found that for some strange reason, fish prefer worms. So when I went fishing, I didn’t think about what I wanted. I thought about what they wanted. I didn’t bait the hook with strawberries and cream. Rather, I dangled a worm or grasshopper in front of the fish and said: ‘Wouldn’t you like to have that?’ Why not use the same common sense when fishing for people?” – Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People

Sounds to me a lot like this,

For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. – Saint Paul, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
